A message to Canberra Residents
Dear Residents and friends of Canberra,

Time flies and we are already reaching the end of year 2009. This year has been indeed a challenging year as  Singapore weathered through our worst financial downturn since independence. Together with our partners in Northwest CDC, we have assisted many families affected by the downturn and assisted many job seekers in re-employment. Canberra Grassroots Organisations have played an important role of keeping our community together through the numerous activities and programmes organised for you. It is in such difficult times that community cohesion and bonding will be challenged and I am glad that we have weathered the storm together to emerge much stronger than before.

I am pleased to announce the improvements to our infrastructure via the following projects :
  • New road access from Blk 358A carpark to the Sembawang Way - residents of blocks 356A to 360C will be benefit from this new access road. When completed, drivers have another option to exit the estate instead of the current only way of existing via Sembawang Drive. This will also reduce the traffic congestions around Canberra Primary School during the school peak hours.

  • Lifts for multi-storey carpark - HDB has approved the building of lift for carpark at block 330A. Residents using the carpark can look forward to the lifts instead of climbing stairs.

  • New park connectors running below the MRT tracks through Sembawang Town linking Sembawang Town to Sembawang beach and Sembawang Park - We had organised a tree planting and an exhibition to showcase the new park connectors. Work is executed to start soon and targeted to complete by mid 2010. Residents will soon have a lighted jogging and cycling path beneath the MRT tracks with fitness corners.

  • We have also started our discussions with the LTA on some improvement to our bus services to Sembawang Town. Residents have given feedback on the lack of bus services to the eastern part of Singapore and also requested for a direct bus service to the Holy Tree hindu temple at Yishun. In addition I would also like to see bus services to the new Khoo Teck Puat Hospital and Yishun Swimming pool. I look forward to announcing the bus improvements once proposals are approved by the authorities.

There will be an exciting Count Down Party on 31 December at the hard court next to Sun Plaza and I hope to see you and your family at the party. For the first time we will have firework display to welcome the new year specially for Sembawang Town.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year 2010!

Yours sincerely,

Dr Lim Wee Kiak, PBM
